HIV and Other STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD), including HIV, are among the most common infections in the world and can have devastating consequences. There is greater risk of acquiring STDs and HIV in less-developed countries where they are more common. Increased sexual activity and casual sexual relationships tend to occur more during travel to foreign destinations than at home. Commercial sexual services (e.g. in Southeast Asia) attract many foreign travelers.

• Abstinence is the best way to avoid STD.

• Male latex condoms can reduce the risk of STD transmission.

STD symptoms include vaginal, penile, or anal discharge, genital lesions, and pelvic pain. Seek prompt medical care if you develop any of these signs. If you had sexual activity that puts you at risk for an STD, see your physician for testing even if you have no symptoms.
